Established in 1798, Tobermory is one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries and the only whisky producer on the Isle of Mull. Originally founded as Ledaig, it has experienced several periods of closure and revival throughout its history. Following its acquisition by Burn Stewart Distillers in 1993, whisky production resumed after the distillery had been closed for more than a decade. Today, the distillery operates under CVH Spirits.
Two contrasting single malts are produced. Tobermory is distilled using unpeated malt, while Ledaig is made from heavily peated malt, resulting in a bolder and more smoky spirit character. Produced at different times of the year, both styles are created in the same stillhouse.
Ledaig combines robust peat smoke with maritime notes, citrus fruit and gentle spice. The distinctive spirit performs well at a young age and after extended maturation, with refill sherry and bourbon casks proving well suited to its development. When carefully matured, Ledaig retains its characteristic coastal smoke while developing additional complexity, creating a whisky that stands apart from many of its island contemporaries.
