This 12-year-old Ledaig is a robust, heavily peated single malt from Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull. Full maturation in a refill American oak hogshead has kept the cask influence measured and gives the distillate room to lead. Waves of peat and pine are joined by barbecue smoke, orange peel, menthol and a touch of strawberry, with maritime character running throughout. The result is unmistakably Ledaig: smoky, savoury and energetic, with oak spice carrying the whisky into a persistent finish.

The distillery
Tobermory (Ledaig)
Established in 1798, Tobermory is one of Scotland's oldest licensed distilleries and the only whisky producer on the Isle of Mull. Originally founded as Ledaig, it has experienced several periods of closure and revival throughout its history. Following its acquisition by Burn Stewart Distillers in 1993, whisky production resumed after the distillery had been closed for more than a decade. Today, the distillery operates under CVH Spirits.
Two contrasting single malts are produced. Tobermory is distilled using unpeated malt, while Ledaig is made from heavily peated malt, resulting in a bolder and more smoky spirit character. Produced at different times of the year, both styles are created in the same stillhouse.
Ledaig combines robust peat smoke with maritime notes, citrus fruit and gentle spice. The distinctive spirit performs well at a young age and after extended maturation, with refill sherry and bourbon casks proving well suited to its development. When carefully matured, Ledaig retains its characteristic coastal smoke while developing additional complexity, creating a whisky that stands apart from many of its island contemporaries.
The Islands refers to Scotland's whisky producing islands outside Islay, including Arran, Jura, Mull, Orkney, Skye, Raasay and Harris. Although often referred to as a whisky region, the Islands is not a protected Scotch whisky designation. Most island distilleries fall within the Highland region, while Islay holds its own protected status.
Many island malts are associated with coastal influences, maritime character and distinctive spirit styles. However, the diversity of these whiskies has made them attractive to independent bottlers. Ranging from fruity and elegant expressions to heavily peated styles, many keep a clearly identifiable distillery character throughout maturation. This allows Rare Find to explore a wide variety of cask types and finishing techniques while preserving the individuality of the spirit.
