The distillery
Tomatin
Founded in 1897, Tomatin Distillery is located in the village of Tomatin, south of Inverness. During the twentieth century, Tomatin underwent major expansion and became one of the largest malt whisky producers in Scotland, reaching its peak in the 1970s.
In recent years, Tomatin has placed emphasis on cask selection and maturation, with greater use of first-fill bourbon and sherry casks helping to enhance its approachable, fruit forward character. While best known for its unpeated whisky, the distillery also produces a small quantity of peated spirit each year.
The fruity, approachable character of Tomatin makes it well suited to Rare Find bottlings. Equally at home in bourbon or sherry casks and capable of long maturation, it offers excellent scope for cask exploration. Our releases have included both unpeated and lightly peated expressions, showcasing different facets of the distillery's character.
The Highlands are Scotland's largest whisky producing region, covering a vast geographical area of the mainland along with many of Scotland's whisky producing islands. Distilleries are found across diverse landscapes, creating one of the most geographically varied whisky producing areas in Scotland.
Highland whiskies are known for their wide range of styles and flavour profiles. Expressions can vary from light and floral to rich, malty and coastal, reflecting both the broad geography of the region and the distinctive production methods of individual distilleries.
This versatility makes Highland whisky rewarding for independent bottling. Their broad spectrum of spirit styles responds exceptionally well to a variety of cask types, giving opportunities to explore the interplay between distillery character and cask influence.
