Distilled at Glen Elgin in June 1998, this 27-year-old single malt was matured in a refill cask before a secondary maturation in 1st fill ex-bourbon oak. The long initial maturation has given the spirit time to gain depth and balance, while the finishing cask was chosen to bring definition without overwhelming that maturity. After nearly three decades, it stands as an archetypal Speyside expression shaped by time and careful cask management.
The distillery
Glen Elgin
Glen Elgin Distillery was founded in 1898 by William Simpson and James Carle near the hamlet of Fogwatt, south of Elgin in Speyside. Following its acquisition by Scottish Malt Distillers in 1930, the distillery became an important contributor to the White Horse blend.
Glen Elgin is renowned for its fruity and complex spirit character. Long fermentation and extended distillation help develop lush fruit notes, while traditional worm tub condensers contribute weight to the whisky.
Glen Elgin's hallmark fruitiness makes it particularly versatile in maturation. The spirit evolves gracefully in cask, developing additional layers of complexity while retaining a clear sense of distillery character.
The beautiful game deserves a beautiful dram. Rare Find has been proud to be an Official Whisky of the Scottish National Team since our partnership began for EURO 2020 – Scotland’s men’s return to major tournament football after 23 long years.
The Speyside whisky producing region, centred on the River Spey, is home to the greatest concentration of whisky distilleries in the world. The region benefits from abundant water sources, a long-standing whisky making tradition and favourable conditions for maturation.
More than fifty distilleries operate throughout the region, producing a wide variety of single malt whiskies. While styles vary between distilleries, Speyside whiskies are often associated with approachable, fruit driven flavour profiles. The region also has a longstanding association with sherry cask maturation, which contributes to the diversity of styles found.
We seek Speyside whisky for its exceptional diversity. From delicate and floral spirits to richer, more robust styles, the region offers a broad spectrum of character that responds well to a variety of maturation approaches. Many of the region's richer spirits are particularly well suited to long term maturation, developing depth and complexity with age.
